WATCH: Heart-warming video of musicians entertaining passengers on delayed flight

The Philadelphia Orchestra entertain passengers on delayed flightIt’s the moment that every passenger dreads… their flight has been delayed and there’s a long (and boring) wait until the new departure time.

However, passengers onboard a recent flight in China had a very different story to tell after their flight was delayed by three hours.

A string quartet from The Philadelphia Orchestra happened to be travelling on the flight and treated their fellow passengers to an impromptu concert, while the aircraft was waiting on the tarmac in Beijing.

The moment was filmed by a number of people and I’ve included a video below. It shows two violinists, a viola player and a cellist playing a selection from Dvorak’s “American” string quartet for five-and-a-half minutes.

Passengers showed their appreciation by cheering and applauding the performers, who recently launched a tour of China, 40 years after it became the first U.S. orchestra to visit the country.

At the time of publishing this story, the video is close to a million views on YouTube! So the kind act was also great publicity for The Philadelphia Orchestra.

    Yeah PhilOrch!!!!

  2. Wonderful and exactly what is needed on a delayed flight apart from binoculars and a notepad!

Just another example of the kindness in humans who deal with a stressful situation in a positive manor. Outstanding Phil Orch.

  4. What a charming video! Almost makes waiting worthwhile.

  5. Heart warming and magical!

  6. I watched that on news... really nice, but I think the space for perform is not wide enough...

Thanks Robeel for your efforts to forward this video. Look at the contrast, last month we have seen a staff of MU airline trying to throw a chair at an irate customer. Ironically, this sort of entertainment accorded by the Philadelphia Orchestra in China, even as the commander is waiting on the tarmac shows a different attitude.

  8. My daughters did the exact same thing back in a Newark departure lounge late one night in 1994. Our fellow passengers really appreciated them playing the saxophone and clarinet it certainly helped ease the tension of a horror journey.

  9. I heard about the story on NPR. I think The Philadelphia Orchestra was there celebrating the 20th anniversary of their first performance in Communist China.

  10. What would a concert, even impromptu, be without someone's phone ringing? (1:56 of the video.) The musicians looked like they were having fun, and I'm sure the passengers and crew appreciated the added diversion.
