VIDEO: Check out this scary (but awesome looking) tornado over Denver Airport

A weak tornado over Denver International Airport [Photo: Mike Sellers]Hollywood spends millions of dollars creating ‘end of world’ special effects for disaster films, and the end results are normally spectacular.

However, mother nature can do a much better job, as she proved in the United States this week. Check out the video below, which shows a weak tornado forming around the east runways of Denver International Airport on 18th June 2013.

The weather conditions were far from ideal, with all flights either cancelled or re-routed as a result. That’s understandable, of course… you wouldn’t want to fly with those dark clouds around!

According to media reports, the tornado produced winds of nearly 100 miles per hour, and the airport’s safety procedures were immediately activated.

  1. And the airport was 'designed' to be in a prime tornado area ... look to the NW and there is a moisture source along with suitable heating in between it and the airport.

At that stage, it is technically a funnel cloud. Awesome camera work there ... clearly very brave to take a chance under a rotating cloud formation. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Awesome footage. Almost like it is teasing, saying "I could come down there". Good luck for a lot of people it didn't.

  9. Ball-lightning (yes, a reddish/orange glowing orb about the size of a basketball) floating past my SS3 workstation on a P-3C in the middle of a thunderstorm. It eventually "popped" out the MAD boom static wick and blew a hole in the fiberglass fairing the size of a mans fist.

  10. Wow, what a show. What a blessing no one was injured, that looks like it could have been really bad had it touched down.

  11. They were very fortunate the tornado went past the DIA facilities and did not hit the terminal. I would think it would have done damage to the canvas roof of the terminal and damage to planes if it had hit there.

  12. This tornado was located east of the airport. It delayed flights for only for a hour and a half. No damage or injures. Normal operations resumed. Great show though.
